Build a Roman legionary's camp! A detailed set that can now become part of your IMPERIUM ROMANUM collection!

Rome didn't conquer the world solely with the sword. Although its power is primarily associated with the legions, we mustn't forget what truly gave them an advantage in the field: excellent, nearly impregnable fortifications and precisely planned, mobile military camps.

Build a cozy diorama with a Roman tent and numerous props belonging to the legionary stationed there. Take the first step towards building your own modular Roman camp with COBI bricks!

Castrum Romanum, the perfection of military engineering

A Roman military camp, or castrum, was a carefully thought-out complex with a precisely defined layout, combining defensive, logistical, and administrative structures. Camps were most often rectangular in plan. Two main roads intersected perpendicularly, dividing the area into quarters.

In the center was the praetorium, the commander's tent, surrounded by headquarters buildings and warehouses. Guard towers were placed in the corners and signposts, tents, ramparts and defensive ditches ran along the walls.

Each legionary was assigned a place in the tent, and entire units were arranged according to hierarchy. During the Empire's heyday, permanent castra often transformed into permanent settlements, forming the nuclei of future cities.

Tents, Legionary Homes

The contubernium was the smallest organized unit in the Roman army and consisted of eight legionaries. Each contubernium had its own tent, approximately 3 meters wide and 1.5 meters high. Ten such groups formed a centuria.

Within the camp, the centuria tents were placed tightly together, side by side, in a single row. At the far end of the row was the Centurion's Tent – similar in size to the others.

Roman Modular Set from COBI

The Roman tent diorama can become part of a larger whole. Now you can start building a full-size Roman fortress! Simply connect four towers (#20076 Watchtower), placing them in the corners of the camp, and then attach two gates (#20077 Roman Camp Gate) on opposite sides, connecting them to the towers.

Inside the palisade you can arrange dioramas with one or two tents, according to your own concept.

What a great company! Not only do they make cool things (Mothman kit!), their customer service is top-notch. I mis-typed a delivery address resulting in my order being returned. As soon as I contacted Atlanta Brick Co, they told me how to get it re-sent and were extremely nice about it. Good people!
