LEGO® began making HO, 1:87 Scale, vehicles in 1955 to go with its newly launched Town Plan theme. LEGO obtained the licenses to make these matchbox size vehicles from the vehicle manufacturers and most vehicles have the make and model number on the bottom along with the LEGO logo.

These vehicles were sold in a variety of ways: individually by retailers, in larger kits, and with clear display case style garages with LEGO studs on top of them.

Just like Matchbox & Hot Wheels, these vehicles were well played with so finding them in good condition is rare.

LEGO made them out of Cellulose Acetate until 1962 when it switched to ABS. The under carriage and wheels of vehicles cars are made of metal.

Since these HO scale vehicles were made exclusively in Europe, licensed vehicle manufacturers included VW, Volkswagen, Bedford, Mercedes, Fiat, Opel, Vauxhall, Shell, and Esso.
