Antique LEGO® Wooden Toys
LEGO's toy making origins date to 1932, when the Great Depression pushed founder Ole Kirk Christiansen's furniture business to the brink of failure and he turned to making wooden toys. Yo-yos, pull toys, and trains were among the most popular, though the company produced nearly every toy imaginable — cradles, rattles, toy guns, and even an abacus.
Wooden toy production ended in 1960, following the third fire in the company's history and their success with plastic. Christiansen's sons Karl Georg and Gerhardt went on to found an independent firm, Bilofix, which continued making wooden toys.
The name LEGO comes from the Danish leg godt, or "play well" — and the early wooden toys lived up to it. Built to last, they were played with heavily and often handed down through generations. As a result, examples in good condition are now genuinely scarce.
